Automation and Controls Technician Food Manufacturing On-site (Tar Heel, NC) Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM
Salary: $35-$44 per hour
Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401k, Education reimbursement Overview This role supports all electrical, automation, and technical functions needed to keep plant operations running efficiently. The position focuses on safe work practices, equipment reliability, documentation accuracy, and supporting the maintenance team with strong troubleshooting abilities.
Key Responsibilities Safety & Compliance - Promote a safe work environment by following established procedures and participating in regular safety reviews.
- Maintain clean, sanitary working conditions and ensure adherence to quality and regulatory standards.
- Recognize and report issues that may affect product quality, food safety, or employee safety.
Technical Troubleshooting & Support - Diagnose and repair electrical, automation, and control?system issues using schematics, manuals, and testing tools.
- Address problems with PLCs, HMIs, robotics, and networked equipment to minimize downtime.
- Partner with IT when server, network, or communication systems impact plant operations.
Process & Project Improvements - Recommend improvements that enhance automation, efficiency, and equipment performance.
- Collaborate with engineering and leadership on projects requiring technical input.
Training & Documentation - Maintain accurate documentation for electrical and control systems, including program backups and schematics.
- Assist in training maintenance staff on equipment operation, troubleshooting, and safe work practices.
Qualifications- Associate degree or technical training with 2+ years of related experience (or equivalent combination).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, procedures, and safety documentation.
- Skilled in writing basic reports and communicating clearly with team members and leadership.
- Hands?on experience with Allen Bradley/Rockwell automation is required.
- Able to diagnose electrical issues using standard tools such as multimeters, PCs, and software utilities.
- Self?motivated, reliable, and comfortable working independently.
- Willing to work weekends, holidays, or overtime when needed.
Preferred Skills- Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems.
- Strong teamwork skills and ability to work effectively in a fast?paced environment.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe workplace and following established safety procedures.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements- Work occurs in a production setting with exposure to hot/cold temperatures, moisture, chemicals, and moving equipment.
- Requires regular standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs (up to 75 lbs occasionally with assistance).
- Must be able to work in areas with moderate to high noise levels.
