Service Designer, SC Cleared

We are seeking a highly experienced Service Designer with a strong track record of delivering end-to-end, user-centred services in the public sector. This role requires a deep understanding of Government Digital Service (GDS) standards and principles, and the ability to lead complex design initiatives that align with policy intent, user needs, and organisational objectives.

Rate - £600.00 per day inside ir35

Location - Remote working with occasional travel on client site

Duration - 6 months

Clearance - SC Cleared

Key Skills

Lead the design of end-to-end services that effectively deliver on user needs and policy objectives
Ensure accessibility, usability, and inclusivity across all touchpoints and service journeys
Map and analyse complex service ecosystems to identify pain points, opportunities, and interdependencies
Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including policy, operations, delivery, product, system design, and other user-centred design disciplines
Engage in open and transparent design practices, sharing insights and collaborating with internal teams and wider stakeholders (subject to information security protocols)
Produce detailed mappings of current ('as-is') services and processes-both digital and offline-based on verified data
Develop clear and effective service blueprints, journey maps, and visual artefacts to communicate design thinking
Facilitate co-creation workshops, design sprints, and stakeholder engagement sessions
Align service design outputs with technical feasibility, organisational goals, and delivery constraints
Advocate for inclusive, evidence-based, and user-centred design practices across teams and departments
Contribute to the development of service strategies and long-term transformation roadmaps
Identify and document service pain points beyond the current scope of work for future improvement
Mentor and support junior service designers and actively participate in the wider design community
Design with an eye toward scalability, sustainability, and ongoing service iteration

Essential Experiences

Extensive experience in Service Design within the UK public sector
Deep familiarity with GDS standards, service assessments, and digital transformation within government contexts
Proven ability to work in agile, multidisciplinary teams in complex environments
Expertise in creating and presenting service design artefacts to diverse audiences
Strong facilitation skills with both internal teams and external stakeholders
A commitment to inclusive, user-centred, and accessible design
Experience mentoring and leading design professionals
