We're looking for an exceptional Scientific Software Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Scientific Software Engineer, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home.This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 25 hours per week and we will also try our best to consider those intending to work a jobshare. Your world of expertise

You will contribute to the work of both the Operational Evaluation and Monitoring and the Convective-scale Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) teams. These teams are part of the Research to Operations group within Weather Science, an exciting area of the Met Office where scientific innovation meets operational delivery.

In the Operational Evaluation and Monitoring team, you will help coordinate the evaluation and monitoring of our operational NWP systems. This work is essential to understanding system performance and guiding the scientific response to current and emerging operational needs.

Develop and maintain the software capability required to run verification of NWP models and to deliver upgrades to regional NWP systems.
Deliver robust, scalable, and efficient code that underpins Met Office science programmes, ensuring it meets operational and research needs.
Support and troubleshoot software applications, ensuring continuity and reliability in research and operational environments.
Collaborate with scientists and other scientific software engineers to translate scientific requirements into technical solutions.

As our Scientific Software Engineer, your total reward package will be up to £49,806 annually, which includes:

An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%.
Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) you will be paid £2,200 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this marketdrivenallowance from April 2024 until March 2026 in your monthly pay.
Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave.

Expert by Nature: You have a strong track record of delivering significant advances in software capability through the effective application of technical knowledge, understanding, and skills.

Live and Breathe It: You consistently apply robust Quality Assurance processes, best practices, standards, and/or regulations, showing a deep commitment to excellence in delivery. You have experience with version control tools such as Git/GitHub.
Better Together: You communicate knowledge clearly and concisely in both written and verbal formats, tailoring messages for diverse audiences and building trust and credibility.
Better Together and Keep Evolving: You support the development of others by sharing expertise and guidance, resulting in positive impacts and the fostering of a collaborative environment.
