Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with an interest in TB & COPD

We are looking for an individual to fill a new post within the Respiratory Medicine Department at St Jamess Hospital.

We are seeking a dynamic Respiratory consultant to join the Leeds TB& COPD services at St Jamess University Hospital. The appointee will become a key member of a dedicated and highly experienced multidisciplinaryteam. The TBservice offer an integrated service including diagnosis & treatment ofactive TB & latent TB infection & screening for people who have been incontact with TB. The Leeds Integrated COPD Service is a Consultant led Servicein collaboration between Respiratory Medicine at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust & the Community Respiratory Team at Leeds Community Health Trust.

The job is a full-time post comprising of ten programmedactivities, with supervision of the resident doctors and specialist nurses.There will also be an on-call commitment to cover the Respiratory medicine medicalrota on a 1:12 basis, contribute to the Acute Medicine rota 1:109 andcontribute 0.7PA to work flexibly to support General Internal Medicine.

Main duties of the job

LeedsTeaching Hospitals NHS Trust makes up one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe housing over 2,000 beds andproviding a range of general, acute and elective services, together with an significant number of regional and supra-regional specialties. The department of Respiratory Medicine hasundergone significant modernisation over recent years and remains a centre forclinical and educational excellence. Inpatient services are provided in GledhowWing at St Jamess Hospital. This includes three Respiratory wards, an NIV /Weaning unit, a dedicated CF ward, a procedures room, Sleep services and aNurse-led day unit. There are cross city outpatient facilities including adedicated chest clinic at Leeds General Infirmary. The unit has a strongcommitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research.

The appointee must hold the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom, orequivalent, and have completed higher specialist training in RespiratoryMedicine. Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register fortrainees if currently in a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointmentregulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the SpecialistRegister.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate would join the other Respiratory Consultants, Infectious Diseases Consultant & Paediatrician inthe team. They are expected to work closely with the current multidisciplinaryteam to sustain current capacity of the TB & COPD Services with a view toexpand in the near future, ensure the smooth flow from diagnosis to treatment& follow up, including developing innovative ways of working to sustainincreasing patient load, contribute to the Respiratory & Acute Medicine oncall rota.

Support development of the TB and COPD Services toensure that we are working with the best innovative ways of working

Work closely with multidisciplinary team &developing innovative ways of working to sustain increasing patient load

Contribute to the Respiratory & Acute Medicine oncall rota

To take an active role in undergraduate and postgraduateteaching

Active participation in research within the department.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent qualification. MRCP or equivalent qualification. Certificate of completion of Specialist training in Respiratory and General Medicine or CESR or equivalent.
  • Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICAITON.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
Experience
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Respiratory Medicine with special interest in TB & COPD.
  • Specifically, he/she must demonstrate higher training in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other requirements
  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
  • Well organised and skilled in good time management.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
  • Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
  • - CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) Portfolio Pathway (or) international applicants should comply with GMC specialty registration process. Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the relevant Specialist Register at the time of the application.
  • Attendance at recognised management course.
Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Respiratory Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
