Infrastructure Virtualisation Engineer (Contract)
Defence Programme
Location: Hybrid - Remote/South West (2-3 days on site per week estimated)
Contract role: Inside IR35
Clearance: High level of clearance required
Rate: £500 - £600 per day

A major Defence programme is looking for an experienced Infrastructure Virtualisation Engineer to support the build and evolution of a large-scale secure virtualisation platform forming part of a critical national capability. This contract will suit someone who enjoys working in high-assurance technical environments, solving complex infrastructure challenges, and collaborating within disciplined engineering teams - particularly those with a military or defence background. If you've worked within Defence, Signals, CIS, or secure infrastructure environments, your background will translate well.

Opportunity
You'll be joining a specialist infrastructure team responsible for designing, building and validating the core virtual estate underpinning a secure Defence platform. This is a hands on engineering role - ideal for someone who enjoys deep technical work as well as contributing to design decisions, documentation and continuous improvement of platform capability. You'll work alongside architects, system testers, and service management teams to ensure the virtual infrastructure remains resilient, secure and ready to support operational demand.

What You'll Be Doing

• Designing, building and validating virtualisation infrastructure components
• Supporting the delivery of a large-scale virtual environment operating at enterprise scale
• Producing and reviewing technical design documentation
• Supporting system integration and wider testing activities
• Troubleshooting infrastructure issues and supporting service improvement
• Working closely with operational and service management teams

Core Technical Environment

• VMware ESXi (distributed switching, resource scheduling, power management)
• VMware vSAN (hybrid and all flash storage models)
• VMware vCenter (HA, clustering and resilience)
• VMware NSX (microsegmentation and secure networking)
• VMware Horizon (AppVolumes / AppStacks)

What We're Looking For

• 3+ years' experience in virtualisation engineering within complex environments
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical capability
• Experience designing and delivering virtual infrastructure solutions
• Confident communication skills and clear documentation ability
• Professional virtualisation certification (VMware VCP or equivalent)
• Experience working in secure or regulated environments

Desirable Experience (Highly beneficial but not essential)

• Defence or wider UK public sector environments
• Large-scale enterprise virtualisation platforms
• Secure or accredited system design
• Agile or mixed delivery methodologies
• Networking awareness / certifications
• Experience working within multi tenant secure architectures
