Contract Type: Initial 6 month contract (Outside IR35)
Rate: £450 per day
Location: Fully Remote
Role Overview
A VMware Kubernetes Platform Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and operating enterprise-grade Kubernetes platforms on VMware infrastructure, enabling secure, scalable, and resilient cloud-native applications. They play a critical role in supporting development teams by providing robust platform capabilities, ensuring applications are efficiently deployed, managed, and optimised across multiple environments.
The role combines hands-on engineering with platform design, automation, and operational responsibilities, including CI/CD integration, Infrastructure as Code, and Kubernetes security and reliability practices. Working closely with development, infrastructure, and security teams, they ensure platform services are highly available, secure, and aligned with organisational standards, while continuously improving performance, observability, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Kubernetes Platform Design & Engineering
- Design, deploy, and manage Kubernetes clusters on VMware platforms (eg, TKG/VKS), ensuring scalability, resilience, and performance across multi-environment setups (dev, test, prod).
- Application Enablement & Support
- Work closely with development teams to onboard applications to Kubernetes, define containerisation best practices, and troubleshoot platform and workload issues.
- Automation & DevOps Integration
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automate infrastructure provisioning using Infrastructure as Code (eg, Terraform, Ansible), and develop Helm charts for application and platform deployments.
- Platform Operations, Reliability & SRE
- Ensure platform reliability through monitoring, SLIs/SLOs, incident management, and continuous improvement, supporting 24/7 operational readiness.
- Security & Governance Implementation
- Implement Kubernetes security controls including RBAC, network policies, secrets management, PKI, and supply chain security, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards.
What You Will Ideally Bring:
- Kubernetes & Container Expertise
- Strong hands-on experience running Kubernetes in production, particularly on VMware platforms (TKG/VKS), with solid knowledge of networking, storage, and ingress.
- Cloud, VMware & Infrastructure Knowledge
- Experience with virtualised environments, hybrid/private cloud architectures, and underlying infrastructure including networking and load balancing.
- Automation, IaC & CI/CD Tooling
- Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible), CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps), and Kubernetes packaging tools like Helm.
- Scripting & Programming
- Strong Scripting skills (eg, Python, Go) to support automation, tooling, and platform enhancements.
- Observability & Security Practices
- Experience with monitoring/logging tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK) and a solid understanding of Kubernetes security, identity management, and enterprise best practices.
