Minimum requirement:
- Previous experience of working in a policy role within central Government (MOD/HO/FCDO nice to have)
- Previous experience of writing policy papers/submissions
- Stakeholder Management and strong communication skills (written and verbal)
Essential:
- Previous experience of working in a policy role within central Government (MOD/HO/FCDO nice to have) in particular developing policy solutions to novel, sensitive issues
- Previous experience of writing policy papers/submissions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of communicating credibly at senior levels, including providing high quality policy advice to Ministers both in writing and orally.
- Proven ability to quickly build constructive relationships with colleagues across a department and with partners across Whitehall, in order to further MOD objectives and influence cross HMG decision making.
- Ability to deliver good quality work at pace
A high-profile government directorate has been established to manage the relocation and resettlement of individuals who supported UK overseas operations, ensuring their safe transition to the UK and supporting them as they begin new lives with their families. This work sits at the centre of a key cross-government priority and operates at senior levels, with regular engagement across Whitehall and with Ministers.
The directorate leads on relocation and resettlement policy, including assessing applications from individuals seeking relocation, overseeing eligibility decisions, and coordinating delivery across multiple government departments and international partners. The team works at pace in a complex and sensitive environment, managing high-profile and often legally nuanced cases.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing policy input on complex and sensitive issues arising from relocation and resettlement schemes, including those linked to Legacy incidents.
- Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with colleagues across government departments to support policy objectives and influence cross-government decision-making.
- Producing high-quality policy outputs, including ministerial submissions, briefing materials, and strategic communications.
- Managing a portfolio of policy work autonomously, with responsibility for briefing senior stakeholders both in writing and verbally.
- Advising on legal and operational policy matters related to casework, processes, and emerging challenges.
- Supporting the ongoing development and implementation of relocation schemes, ensuring policies remain effective, coordinated, and clearly understood across government.
- Analysing complex information from multiple sources and translating this into clear, concise advice for senior leaders and Ministers.
- Engaging regularly with senior leadership to ensure visibility of key issues and to support informed decision-making.
- Maintaining strong information management practices.
- Producing briefings on high-profile or sensitive individual cases.
- Leading on litigation-related policy areas and coordinating with relevant teams.
- Liaising with cross-government stakeholders on legal and policy matters.
- Deputising for senior leadership as required.
