On behalf of the Met Office we are looking for a Scientific Software Engineer (Inside IR35) for a 6 month contract. Hybrid working with travel to Exeter as and when required.

In this role you will provide technical leadership in the re-design, development and translation, maintenance, and support of existing specialised scientific software applications into an updated code base to enable easier scientific changes and maintenance of existing capabilities.

As a Scientific Software Engineer your main responsibilities will be to:

. Proficiently provide deep and/or broad scientific and technical insight into the re-coding of Legacy scientific software into supportable code.
. Engage with internal and/or external users alongside the Project and Product roles in the team to understand the requirements for your work and significantly contribute to the development and evaluation of plans to meet these requirements.
. Apply, promote, and support good Quality Assurance processes, best practice and standards in both your and others' work to ensure agreed standards are maintained and support collaborative team ways of working.
. Communicate scientific and/or technical knowledge accurately, concisely and in the most appropriate way in both verbal and written communication to ensure that development is able to be continued long-term.
. Support others in the development of their scientific, technical or software engineering skills where possible.
. Understand the wider context of capabilities and needs in the area of which your work is a part and apply this knowledge to inform strategic planning in your strategic head area or beyond.

Essential:

. An active SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. (Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.)
. Strong Software Engineering and Python experience.
. The ability to complete analysis of existing code and understand all components and inputs, to report back to decision makers.
. The ability to re-write existing code into a new language, whilst maintaining as similar outputs as possible.
. Experience in testing of code.
. Expeirence of giving input into process and technical documentation.

Desirable:

. Fortran experience.
