Substantive Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine WM site

We are seeking an enthusiastic and self motivated Consultant to join our department as a Substantive Consultant in Intensive Care, commencing in April 2026. The successful candidate will be integrated into our established 1:8 ICU on call rota and will provide high quality Direct Clinical Care within the Intensive Care Unit. During non ICU weeks, the post holder will deliver daytime DCC in a complementary specialty, preferably Anaesthetics within the Operating Theatres, supporting service needs and ensuring continuity of care across the department.
Main duties of the job Provide High Quality Care to Patients- Medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration.
- Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- Ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
- Adhere to the Trust Customer Service Commitment and adopt a professional approach to customer care at all times.
- Develop clinical practice through self reflection and learning from experience, application of research into practice and active contribution within the multi disciplinary team.
- Provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Service Lead. Contribute to training and teaching of medical trainees, medical students, other doctors in training and other staff groups.
- Responsible for teaching and training non Consultant postgraduate colleagues.
- Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust's translational research/audit portfolio, meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.

Our Critical Care Centre is a thirteen bedded unit catering for patients requiring level 2 and 3 care. Three beds are within side rooms. All beds are funded.
We offer organ support including respiratory, renal and cardiovascular systems using state of the art Philips, LidCo and PICCO monitoring. Up to ten patients may be haemofiltered. We admit between 700 to 750 patients/year: 70% are medical and 30% surgical. The surgical patients consist mainly of patients admitted after major emergency colorectal or trauma/orthopaedic procedures. High level care is also provided throughout the hospital by our 24 hour nurse run, consultant supported Critical Care Outreach Team.
Regular audit data is collected on the MediCUS and we participate in ICNARC. The trust uses CERNER EPR system.
The intensive care consultant rota is 1:8.
The consultant is supported by a team of junior doctors. There is an 1:8 registrar/speciality doctors rota and an 1:8 SHO/clinical fellows rota.
The unit is recognised for training in intensive care medicine by the Intercollegiate Board.
There is regular ICU teaching every Friday, MM meetings every 2 months, Speciality Mortality Review meetings every 2 weeks.
There is a multidisciplinary meeting every Tuesday afternoon where all complex ICU patients are discussed. The meeting is attended by all members of the multidisciplinary team: microbiology, pharmacist, OT, physiotherapist, psychologist.
We work closely together with our colleagues from Chelsea and Westminster ICU. There are 2 cross site Clinical Governance Meetings every year.

WMUH Intensivists, nurses and allied professionals are all closely involved with and supportive of the North West London Critical Care Network which is the most active network in London. Our protocols are all concordant with network policy.
Person Specification Education and Qualifications - Essential- CCT in Intensive Care Medicine/Anaesthesia or equivalent (on or within 6 months of inclusion on Specialist Register at time of interview)
- MRCP or equivalent
- FRCA or equivalent
- EDIC or FFICM
- Broad range of experience in anaesthesia for high risk or another ICU related specialty
- Experience in management of patients in ICU & HDU at a senior level.
- Evidence of commitment to Intensive Care Medicine
- Evidence of change implementation and improvement activity related to Critical Care Medicine +/- another specialty
- Evidence of Clinical Governance activity (risk management, quality improvement etc.)
- Understanding of and involvement in service development
- Previous Consultant level experience
- Putting patients first
- Responsive to patients and staff
- Open and honest

- Demonstrable training and experience in Critical Care procedures.
- Management skills including a willingness and ability to work with others to achieve shared goals.
