Our client, a retail chain of home improvement and agriculture stores, is seeking a Senior Accountant for a 3+ month contract position in Brentwood, TN. This role is hybrid with 2+ days onsite per week.
Day to Day:This position is responsible for ensuring that the general ledger accounting functions for property and gross receipts taxes are performed accurately and timely. In addition, this position works with a 3rd party consultant to manage and monitor the real and personal property tax compliance processes.
- Ensures that the 3rd party consultant is updated timely for new locations, pay directive changes, landlord property tax reconciliations, and other changes that would impact the monthly accrual process for property taxes, reviews the monthly generated entry template, and provides accounting the journal entry for import into SAP. Reviews the general ledger account reconciliations on a monthly basis.
- Prepares, files, and remits payments for gross receipts returns in accordance with tax laws in various jurisdictions. Reconciles the general ledger account monthly.
- Coordinates with outside 3rd party tax providers to ensure tax filings are completed, filed in a timely manner, and compliant with federal, state and local jurisdictions. Reviews 3rd party generated renditions annually.
- Reviews and analyzes monthly income statement and balance sheet activity for property and gross receipts tax accounts to identify unusual trends or variances and provides explanations for significant items noted.
- Prepares and/or reviews annual budgets for property and gross receipts tax general ledger accounts, considering factors such as future new stores openings, abatements, and periodic annual reassessments into account and provides the budgets to Finance and 3rd party consultant.
- Provides information and responds to inquiries from internal and external auditors. Reviews audit findings and implements any necessary changes to tax process.
- Processes all incoming tax notices and tax bills.
- Partners with 3rd party consultants to identify opportunities to reduce property taxes and implements new strategies and processes. This also includes the review and recommendation to move forward with 3rd party suggested property tax appeals,
- Monitors properties with tax abatements/exemptions to ensure bills reflect anticipated savings.
- Reviews and maintains detailed and complete internal control documentation as well as policies and procedures based on changes in processes or regulations.
- Researches and responds to inquiries from other department team members, as well as store, distribution center (DC) personnel.

- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Ability to process, reconcile, and analyze electronic data.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office, including advanced skills in Excel.
- Experience with Systems, Applications, and Product (SAP) and Business Objects data management software, and OneSource Property Tax is preferred.
- Ability to research, audit, and analyze.
- Ability to interact and partner with professionals in various functional areas to resolve complex tax issues throughout Company.
- Ability to represent Company with external auditors and consultants.

- Professional Certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
Must Haves:
- Experience: 5 years of related experience. At least 1 year of experience in a financial or Accounting role.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field is preferred. Any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.
Pay Rate: $40.14 - $41.57 per hour
