Software Engineer - Java/Python

As a Software Engineer II on the Tax Calculation project, you will contribute to the development and automation of controls in our traveler-facing tax calculation processes, such as city taxes. You will work as part of a dedicated contractor unit under the supervision of a Senior Engineer, focusing on backend development, data pipelines, and cloud-based infrastructure.

This role is ideal for engineers who are passionate about building scalable backend systems, automating data-driven processes, and ensuring compliance in a high-volume, customer-facing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Develop backend services and data pipelines using Java and Python.
Write clean, maintainable, and reusable code; apply design patterns where needed.
Implement automated tests and ensure code quality through CI/CD practices.
Monitor system health and performance; define and act on key metrics.
Deploy and operate services in cloud environments (AWS or equivalent).
Troubleshoot and resolve production issues; contribute to postmortems.
Design scalable solutions for tax-related data processing and automation.
Collaborate with the Senior Engineer to prioritize and deliver technical tasks.
Identify and implement improvements in processes, systems, and documentation.
Communicate clearly with stakeholders and contribute to a focused project team.

Required Skills & Experience

Strong backend development experience in Java.
Proficiency in Python for scripting and data processing.
Experience building and maintaining data pipelines.
Hands-on experience with AWS or other cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, Azure).
Familiarity with CI/CD, monitoring, and observability tools.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently within a small, focused team.

Nice to Have

Experience with tax or financial systems.
Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and workflow orchestration tools.
Understanding of compliance and audit requirements in data processing.
